STONEVILLE, N.C. — Officials are considering getting rid of the Stoneville Police Department over concerns of understaffing and budgeting issues, according to Eugene Russell, the city's attorney. Other solutions are being discussed.
A post that circulated on Facebook Monday night revealed the possibility of the police department being absolved - leaving the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office as the city's first responders for emergencies.
Russell revealed some of the claims in the post have merit. The city is on a tight budget and the department has only two full-time officers, three part-time officers, and no chief.
The issue will be on the Stoneville council's agenda during its next meeting on Aug. 6. The community is encouraged to attend and offer their thoughts on the best way to proceed.
