Stolen paving company truck overturned after crash in Archdale

The side of the truck shows the logo of an Albemarle-based paving company, JT Russell and Sons.

ARCHDALE, N.C. — Two of three lanes on I-85 North near Hopewell Church have reopened after a stolen company truck was involved in a crash and found overturned in Archdale Tuesday morning.

The truck has the logo of Albemarle-based paving company, JT Russell and Sons.

The truck was reported stolen by the company's Human Resources (HR) Manager around 5 a.m. after someone broke into the locked lot and took it.

A Davidson County deputy spotted the truck and attempted a traffic stop. The driver fled and Highway Patrol took over the pursuit as it crossed into Randolph County, according to the Davidson County Sheriff's Office.

The driver was spike stripped by Thomasville Police, and the State Highway Patrol conducted a traffic stop where the driver crashed.

"It’s a bad situation, and we wish it hadn’t happened but unfortunately it did, and we are hoping to at least get some advice from this moving forward on how we can possibly prevent this in the future,” Julie Plyler said, HR manager.

They were informed by highway patrol after 6 a.m. that it was been stolen and was involved in a crash.

Big Jims Grocery Store sits close to where the crash happened. Owner, James Underhill said when he hears of a situation like this where a car was stolen, he becomes frustrated, hoping Archdale isn’t painted in a bad light.

"You know how important the reputation of a town is, we have a small town so when you hear about things happening like that, maybe that’s commerce that we wouldn’t get. Maybe that will deter people from moving in,” Underhill fears.

This investigation into the stolen truck and crash is ongoing. Charges are pending, according to Davidson County deputies.
