STOKES COUNTY, N.C. — Three Stokes County Sheriff's Office deputies are accused of severely beating an unarmed 75-year-old man while trying to serve an arrest warrant meant for his son in 2021.

A $2 million civil lawsuit was filed Monday in federal court.

According to documents, Larry Blakley Sr. is suing Western Surety Company, Stokes County Sheriff Joey Lemons, Captain Terry Dalton, and three deputies: Sergeant Josh Mabe, Deputy Cody Smith, and Deputy Monty G. Wolfe.

The lawsuit states that on March 4, 2021, the three deputies tried to execute a warrant for the arrest of Blakley's 53-year-old son, who bears his name. Blakley Jr. had warrants for driving while impaired and driving while license revoked impaired revocation.

"The officers pushed their way into my house, grabbed me, and threw me onto the floor," Blakley Sr. states in the lawsuit.

The lawsuit alleges the deputies threw Blakley Sr. onto the ground and kicked him in his shins, abdomen, hip, back, and forehead. He was taken to a nearby hospital that night for a broken rib, two broken vertebrae, and bruising on his side and buttocks.

The family says despite their complaints to the sheriff's office, no corrective actions were taken against the deputies involved.

The family is suing for $2 million in damages.
