GREENSBORO, N.C. — When there is a tornado warning you might hear it on the TV, or these days it might pop up on your phone from the WFMY News 2 app.
If you're inside or near your home we all know what to do, right?
You find a bathroom or closet with no windows in the lowest part of your home and take shelter.
We say it all the time, and WFMY News 2 Meteorologist Terran Kirksey said it best live on air during a tornado warning on Sunday afternoon.
"Get to your safe spot right now. That's the lowest level of a well-built structure. Put as many walls between you and a well built structure as possible. This storm could produce a tornado with little or no notice," said Kirksey.
Simple enough, but what if you're outside? Or at Hanging Rock State Park?
That is where a tornado warning happened earlier today. No houses around, no closets, no bathrooms. So what do you do?
If you can, you should find something. A shed. A barn. A garage. Any kind of structure.
If there truly are buildings or shelters around, do not run under a tree.
You're going to be tempted, but surrounding those tornadoes is a powerful thunderstorm and that tree can act as a lightning rod.
Try and find a ditch, or a gully, and lay down in it. This gives you the best chance of the tornado passing over you.
Keep in mind though, the tornado winds aren't the only thing you have to worry about. Also stay mindful for falling debris.
