Sparta mayor resigns during heated town council meeting

Things got heated at a small town's council meeting. Two officials resigned from their posts.

SPARTA, N.C. — A town mayor suddenly resigned after a heated town meeting.

Sparta Mayor Wes Brinegar resigned from his post earlier this week.

On top of having no mayor, Sparta is also without a town manager.

The two officials resigned during a town council meeting Tuesday, citing dysfunction.

After some back and forth, things got heated as the council debated who should be appointed to fill the city manager’s job. That’s when Brinegar announced his own resignation.

"You have no idea what you're doing...you've lost your attorney, now you've lost your town manager, you're getting ready to lose other town employees. I'm just telling you. Eventually, this is all going to fall in your lap. Your lap. And you get to make the decisions, 'cause I believe that's really where you're going, 'cause you want all power," Brinegar said.

Brinegar has been the mayor for seven years.
