MANTEO, N.C. — A South Carolina man is dead after a kayaking incident at Cape Hatteras National Seashore on the morning of Saturday, July 20, according to the National Park Service (NPS).

The 72-year-old Florence, SC man launched from the beat near Cape Hatteras Seashore's Ramp 43, located east of the Cape Point Campground near Buxton, North Carolina.

Bystanders told NPS they saw the kayak capsize while trying to ride a wave about 50 yards from the beach.

The bystanders swam out to help the man from the kayak and brought him back to the beach.

NPS reported that CPR was attempted, but he, unfortunately, died.

Dare County Emergency Medical Service and Sheriff’s Office, Hatteras Island Ocean Rescue and Cape Hatteras National Seashore Rangers all responded to the incident.

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is investigating the incident, as well.
