GRAND CANYON, Ariz. — A North Carolina solo backpacker, 60, has died in the Grand Canyon.

This is the sixth death in Grand Canyon National Park in less than a month. Five others, including a 20-year-old from North Carolina, were reported dead in the national park throughout August.

The backpacker was on a multi-day solo backpacking trip from Thunder River to Deer Creek. The Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center said on Tuesday, Aug. 27, around 4 p.m. they received a report of a solo backpacker who failed to check in with a family member while attempting the Thunder River Trail-Deer Creek loop.

The National Park Service search and rescue personnel located a decreased individual along a route connecting Lower Tapeats Camp and Deer Creek Camp on Aug. 28 around 9:45 a.m. The NPS has partnered with the Coconino County Medical Examiner to launch an investigation into what happened.

The Grand Canyon Office of Communications said there is no other information at this time. This remains an ongoing story.
