GREENSBORO, N.C. — The first snow in almost three years hit parts of the Piedmont, but not all, on Monday night into Tuesday morning. The result was some beautiful winter scenes in many areas, but some chaos on local highways too.
Who saw the most snow and who got left out? Let's take a look based on the reports that we can reliably find.
More Snow South and West
There was a band of moderate to heavy snow that developed around midnight and traveled south and west across the Piedmont. This broad a broad swath of over 1" of snow from Iredell to Davie counties traveling farther south toward Rowan, Montgomery, and Randolph counties as well. Overall, 1-2" of snow fell in these areas from the heavier snow band.
In the Triad, areas north of I-40 still saw some snowfall. Around half an inch was seen in much of Forsyth County, and parts of Guilford county. The same can be said for Yadkin County, Surry County, and Stokes County.
Snow was a bit harder to come by with drier air winning out more in Alamance County, Rockingham County, and Caswell County. The Raleigh area also saw little to no snowfall.
First Snow in 1,038 Days!
This was the first snowfall for parts of the area since January of 2022. That's almost three years. Obviously, this is not a big snow for our area but it is noteworthy given our snow drought. That's the second longest snow drought on record for our part of North Carolina.
Winter Forecast
Just because we've had a cold and snowy week doesn't mean the whole winter will be that way. Remember, a long range forecast is a broad look at the pattern over 3 to 4 months. Seasons have ups and downs.
