Sniffing Out Crime! Burlington Police Department Welcomes Two New K9's

The two newest members are Gunner, a 1-year-old German Shepard, and Malinois mix and Koda, a 2-year-old German Shepard.

BURLINGTON, NC (WFMY) -- The Burlington Police Department has added two new additions to their tremendous team!

The two new members combined have a total of eight legs and with their addition, it now brings the police departments total number of working dogs to five.

That's Right!

The Burlington Police Department has added two new police canines to the force.

The two newest members are Gunner, a 1-year-old German Shepard, and Malinois mix and Koda, a 2-year-old German Shepard.

Gunner's handler will be Officer Jason Comer and Koda's handler will be Officer Carley Swiggett.

Comer is an eighteen year veteran with the police department, Gunner will be his third working canine. Swiggett is a two-year veteran and Koda will be his very first police canine.

Both of the dogs were purchased from NC K9 out of Wilson County NC.

Gunner and Koda along with there handlers completed a 9-week training program through NC K9 in Alamance County.

Both dogs are trained in areas of narcotics detection, tracking human scent-such as fleeing criminals and handler protection.

Both teams are now certified with IPWDA (International Police Work Dog Association).
