Smoking Materials Thrown in Trash Caused Deadly Winston-Salem Fire

One person was pulled from the building, but didn't survive, a fire captain confirms.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.-- Winston-Salem fire officials confirm one person died in an early morning fire.

Firefighters were dispatched a reported fire around 5:18am Friday morning, in the 2700 block of Pilgrim Court.

Flames were showing from the duplex unit when firefighters arrived, investigators say. Firefighters pulled an elderly woman from the bedroom of the house, but she didn't survive.

Investigators say an improperly discarded cigarette caused the fire.

The estimated damage to the property is $100,000.

People living in the adjacent unit were not injured. Their property did receive some smoke, water damage.
