Man and woman flying from Greensboro crash on the way to a graduation ceremony, officials say

Officials said two people traveling in a small plane from Greensboro crashed on the way to a graduation ceremony at East Carolina University.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — A small single-engine plane with a man and a woman on board traveling from Greensboro crashed in Pitt County Friday morning, according to CBS affiliate WNCT.

An airport director said the plane crashed about one-half mile southwest of the airport, according to WNCT reports.

During a brief meeting, Greenville Fire and EMS officials said a Piper PA-28 Cherokee plane left Greensboro around 7:30 a.m. and was flying into Greenville when it went off the radar at 8:45 a.m.

Fire officials said 24-year-old Harley Elley, and 21-year-old Alissa Walker, were found and they were OK.

Officials said they were on the way to East Carolina University to attend a graduation ceremony, according to WNCT.

WNCT said a 911 call came in about the plane crashing in a wooded area at 8:47 a.m. Rescue crews had to swim a river to get to the scene. Fire officials said it did not land in the water.

A Coast Guard helicopter from Elizabeth City was called to help rescue them due to the high water in a river.

They were taken to a local hospital for treatment.
