GREENSBORO, N.C. — Law enforcement officers and citizens lined highway overpasses from Raleigh to Greensboro to pay respect to a fallen hero.
Multiple agencies assisted in the escort for the body of fallen Greensboro Police Sgt. Philip Dale Nix on Wednesday afternoon. His body was driven from the medical examiner's office in Raleigh to Hanes Lineberry Funeral Home in Greensboro.
Sgt. Nix died Saturday when police said he was fatally shot while trying to stop a crime at the Sheetz gas station off Sandy Ridge Road in Colfax. Three suspects were arrested in connection with the shooting.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced. There is a vigil happening Wednesday at 5 p.m. at the Phil McDonald Plaza 220 South Greene Street. The gathering will take place in downtown Greensboro outside of the City's office building across the street from the Greene Street parking deck.
The event is being put on by the City's Office of Community Safety.
