GREENSBORO, N.C. — Guilford County Schools Superintendent Dr. Sharon Contreras said Gateway Education Center will stay open to students who want to attend.
At a Wednesday School Board meeting, Dr. Contreras said Gateway won't be closed. The board will meet with parents and stakeholders about available options in light of revelations about building conditions.
Board members expressed that there will be a motion to repair Gateway at the next meeting. How exactly, hasn’t been determined.
Contreras mentioned numerous issues with substandard conditions at the school, including problems with raw sewage and rodents. She said they’ve had to patch HVAC systems and leaky roofs because they cannot afford to replace them. Buckets have been used to hold water during rain. Contreras said they operate on 'a shoestring budget that does not allow for optimal quality of a learning environment.'

Dr. Contreras also presented a recommendation for Hampton Elementary School to be closed and students to be moved. There will be a public hearing on April 30. Current enrollment at Hampton is less than 50 students.
A capacity crowd attended the meeting with dozens of parents and community members standing in the lobby.
