ROCK HILL, S.C. — Two people, including a trooper, are injured after an officer-involved shooting in Rock Hill, South Carolina.
At 7:45 p.m., Trooper Wise attempted to stop a vehicle for a seatbelt violation, according to Director of South Carolina Department of Public Safety Leroy Smith. The driver failed to stop, which led to a brief pursuit.
Officials say the suspect exited the vehicle and began to fire. The trooper returned fire. Both were struck.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division received notification of the incident at 8:35 p.m. Sunday.
Trooper Wise apprehended the suspect, and both were transported to Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill, Smith said. The suspect is now at a hospital in Charlotte.
The trooper is in great spirits and sustained non-life threatening injuries. Smith asks everyone to keep the trooper and his family in your thoughts and prayers.
Trooper Wise was wearing his body armor, credited for saving his life.
"This job is always a risk, a sacrifice, but as we always say, being in law enforcement is a calling," Smith said. "They make sacrifices day in and day out, that's why we call them our heroes because that's what they do. They put their lives in peril every day just to keep everyone safe."
SLED is now investigating this case.
At this time, officials haven't released the identities of the trooper and the other individual involved.
