STOKES COUNTY, N.C. — A year ago, over 800 acres were burning on the Sauratown Mountain. It was a campfire that was to blame.

Today, it looks completely different. It doesn't even look like a fire took place.

On Saturday, Nov. 19, 2023, multiple fire crews were on the scene battling to control the massive fire. Guilford County Ranger Jimmy Holt said 50 youth campers were evacuated from Mountain Top Youth Camp.

Over one hundred firefighters worked tirelessly for weeks keeping fire lines contained working against the lack of rainfall and high wind speeds. Many of them, even missing Thanksgiving with family to make sure the fire didn't spread any further.

People who live on the mountain say their experience was traumatizing but they are thankful for first responders.

"When you have all of these people out here fighting to save your home because some irresponsible kid set it on fire. May not intentionally but it gets out of control and these people, they had extra crews coming in from out west," Resident Steve Morgan said.

The cause of the fire turned out to be a campfire that had gotten out of control. The damage totaled to be thousands of dollars.
