Safety tips ahead of Halloween

Greensboro Police is hosting a Trunk or Treat series this week.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Wednesday night marks the start of the Greensboro Police Department's Trunk or Treat series.

WFMY News 2 spoke to safety experts around the Triad to get some advice for families who plan to Trick or Treat.

Safety experts recommend pedestrians use flashlights and add reflective tape to clothing to remain visible throughout the night.

Additional recommendations:

  • Pay attention to your surroundings
  • Look both ways while crossing the street
  • Drive slow in neighborhoods

"If you expect trick or treaters to come to your home. You should have a well lit driveway and walkway so they can find their way to the candy and to your door," Cone Health Emergency Management and Workplace Violence Coordinator Thomas Gioello said, "If you want to participate in trick or treating, you turn your lights on and if you do not then turn your lights off."

GPD asks that parents pay attention to the type of candy kids receive, especially if it looks opened.

"Maybe the parent has an extra bag and they hold onto it. That way the parent can use their own discretion to whether they want to give the candy to the kids or if they just want the kids to have the store brought candy." Public Information Coordinator Patrick DeSota explained.

GPD said the Trunk or Treat series is full of candy and fun activities for kids.
