WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A Triad infant is battling RSV at Brenner Children's Hospital in Winston-Salem.
Brittani Wray told WFMY News 2 that her son, Matthew, is medically fragile and has had breathing issues all his life.
Now, she is raising awareness so other parents know to take it seriously.
"It's hard for families, especially for parents. We understand that this type of situation is scary. You don't know until you're in it. And as a parent you're panicking because you can't fix your baby, someone else has to fix your baby," said Wray. "So you have to kind of stand on the sidelines and that's very difficult. But, I would say to those parents that your presence is the best medicine."
The state of North Carolina said RSV hospitalizations have increased for 5 straight weeks.
Wray said they started out at the emergency room in Shelby, then went to the Jeff Gordon Children's Center* in Concord before getting life-flighted to Brenner Children's Hospital
The threat of RSV forced Cone Health to enforce new restrictions a few weeks ago:
- Children under 12 cannot visit most units at Alamance Regional and Moses Cone.
- All visitors must wear masks.
