ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. — Rockingham County opened up a Mobile Dental Unit (MDU) on Monday.
Leaders said it'll serve children who come from uninsured and low-income families.
The health director said he expects at least 1,300 children to take advantage.
The Rockingham County Division of Public Health received a $400,000 community grant from The Duke Endowment to provide dental services within the Rockingham County Public School system. The grant has enabled RCDPH to launch school-based programs such as the MDU that prioritize preventive services such as regular cleanings & sealants and address certain restorative treatments, including fillings for school-aged children.
The county said they have enough money to run the program for three years.
The trailer has two dental chairs and can take X-rays.
“Dental disease is 100% preventable when children have consistent access to oral health care,” said Trey Wright, Rockingham County Public Health Director. “Evidence shows that school-based programs are effective, and the MDU will make it possible for us to provide kid-friendly dental care that’s safe, convenient, and accessible.”
