ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. — Good news for Rockingham County residents — access to high-speed internet is expanding.
As part of the Completing Access to Broadband (CAB) program, the North Carolina Department of Technology (NCDIT) is investing over $5 million to connect nearly 900 more homes with high-speed internet. The funding for the CAB grant came in equal parts from Rockingham County, the NCDIT and Spectrum Southeast, who each contributed a little over $1.7 million.
In 2022, the county announced the Connect Rockingham project, which has managed to reach over 4,000 homes in the area since its inception. The project is expected to be completed by Halloween 2026.
Before that, Rockingham County was awarded funds in late 2020 as part of state-wide $30 million investment to bring broadband internet to more rural areas.
Rockingham County is home to over 90,000 residents, ranking outside the top 30 among North Carolina counties when it comes to population, though it is larger than some surrounding counties when it comes to land area (565.55 square miles).
