Guilford County businesses cash in on March Madness excitement

Rixster Grill in High Point and Lockwood Tavern in Greensboro said March Madness has given their businesses an extra economic boost.

GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — High Point restaurant Rixster Grill says that they are seeing record sales this March.

As well as a new bar and restaurant in Greensboro, Lockwood Tavern, that is seeing a spike in sales already.

Where is this spike of business coming from? Well, you guessed it... local March Madness fans.

Basketball, beer, and burgers: three things many folks at these local businesses are enjoying with the NCAA Tournament at the top of mind.

"March Madness is definitely one of the busiest times of the year for us, March is the busiest of the entire year," Co-owner and Bartender at Rixster Grill, Cody Ceresi said.

Although new, the same goes for the folks at Lockwood Tavern, it opened up in the beginning of February, on the same day UNC and Duke played each other in the regular season.

Since opening, Lockwood Tavern Owner, Autumn Holmes said they've seen a spike in sales just this month.

"We definitely have a fan base of NC State, Carolina, and Duke. That's kind of who we've seen in here watching games. We'll have a full table of state fans and we'll have a full table of Carolina fans," Holmes said.

Justin Sampson is the Front House Manager at Rixster Grill, he said business increases every March and has for the past 5 years, but this year, they are seeing record sales.

"It's almost close to double but not quite there yet but we are getting close to that," Sampson said.

It's something both businesses are grateful fore, to be able to focus on basketball, beer, and burgers with their guests.

"When those games are on, especially when it was like Carolina vs State or Carolina vs Duke, we get phone calls like, 'is there room in there?' and you know, we're newly open so, it's like, 'yeah, come in you know, we've got tables…' which has also kind of created some regulars for us at the same time, which is nice," Holmes said.
