GREENSBORO, N.C. — "Every retailer has their policy, but many extend the window through the end of January, effectively giving recipients a month to return or exchange once they've gotten their gift," said Samantha Gordon, Consumer Reports.
Walmart is allowing most items purchased between October 1, 2023 and December
31, 2023 to be returned until January 31, 2024.
Target deadlines are different for electronics and entertainment items. You'll have through January 24, 2024.
At Best Buy, make sure your returns are processed by January 13, 2024.
Holiday gifts purchased from Amazon will need to be returned by January 31, 2024.
"Several retailers around the marketplace have started to change their return policy. and many are starting to charge for returns which is new, we've been used to free returns for a very long time," said Lechelle Yates of the Better Business Bureau.
It's common for stores to charge a 10% to 25% restocking fee for electronics, especially if the packaging has been opened.
More often than not, your return doesn't get you cash in hand, instead it's usually a store gift card. And for some stores or items, returns are not accepted, period.
"There is no right to return law in the United States or North Carolina. They don't have to take back and they don't have to give you store credit," said Yates.
Nearly 40% of people say they will be returning at least one holiday gift.
