RALEIGH, N.C. — Primary Day is Tuesday, March 3, and after you cast your ballot, you may have the urge to take that 'I Voted' selfie.
Just make sure you snap the photo OUTSIDE of the voting booth. North Carolina law states voters can't take pictures or videos of themselves, other voters or voting ballots inside the voting enclosure. Why? The North Carolina State Board of Elections (NCSBOE) says photos of voting ballots could be used as proof of a vote for a candidate in a vote-buying scheme.
Now, you are allowed to bring your phone inside the booth, but you can't communicate with anyone via talk, text, email. The State Board of Elections says this is because of limits on voter assistance and to prevent disruptions in the voting booth.
NCSBOE says voters can bring voting guides and other materials into the voting booth. They may also use electronic devices to access a slate card or candidate information, provided they don't use the device to communicate with anyone.
