STOKESDALE, N.C. — Red Dog Farm Animal Rescue Network is serving as a refuge for animals displaced by Hurricane Helene.
The non-profits barn in Stokesdale is home to Marigold and Phoebe. The two horses farm was washed away about two months ago in Western North Carolina.
"Farm was wiped out and the grass is gone," Executive Director Lauren Riehle shared.
Riehle told us the two horses are a part of a 25% increase of animals Red Dog Farm has seen this year. She said the devastation of Hurricane Helene has led to more animals being displaced.
Recently, the non-profit unveiled its new 12- stall barn. It can house about a dozen full-size horses and helps meet the need.
"We feel lucky that we can be a space for those folks and give them some comfort in knowing that their animal is safe," Riehle said.
A change she wants to see for all the animals that come through the rescue program.
"Once they get here, they are with us until they find their forever home," Riehle said.
As the non-profit works to care for all types of animals the communities help is needed now more than ever.
