Vague social media school threat prompts extra precaution at Triad schools

Triad school districts are aware of the national threat that is being sent around and are taking the proper precautions.

RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. — Triad school districts are aware of a vague school threat message on social media that is circulating across North Carolina.

Randolph County Sheriff's Office got a call Thursday about a Snapchat threat that appears to be circulating across the entire country.

“Obviously we want to protect our children. I say our children, they are just as much our children as they are their parents. We take it just as seriously as any threat of violence, whether it’s in our school or anywhere, we are going to take seriously," said Lt. Colonel Steven Nunn.

Detectives are actively investigating the picture posted that shows a picture of a phone screen with a message related to a threat to commit a school shooting on Friday, May 5.

During the investigation, it was discovered that the Snapchat school threat is being sent across North Carolina and other states. The original threat does not mention a specific school.

According to law enforcement, the post originated in another state, and they have determined the threats are not credible.

Because of the threat and out of precaution, the sheriff's office has extra deputies assisting school resource officers at all Randolph County Schools Friday.

Guilford County Schools said they will continue to follow all protocols in partnership with law enforcement to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Alamance-Burlington School System have also been made aware of the threats circulating around the state but are not aware of any immediate threat to their schools.

Law enforcement urges parents and students not to share this post online or any post.  If you see something -- you should say something -- report it to the police immediately.
