'A void in our hearts' | Ragsdale High School wrestling coach dies

GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — A Guilford County School (GCS) community is mourning the recent death of a high school wrestling coach.

A Ragsdale High School athletic director shared on Facebook that former wrestling coach Mike Raybon has died.

Raybon worked at the school for many years as a coach and athletic director. 

The gym at Ragsdale is named after him. He was inducted into the state athletic association's Hall of Fame.

Ragsdale High's Athletic Director, Deborah Jones, shared the following on Facebook on Friday, May 17:

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Coach Mike Raybon, a beloved figure in our community and a true legend in the world of wrestling. Coach Raybon passed away last night, leaving behind a profound impact on the lives of countless athletes and colleagues.

Coach Raybon dedicated his life to the pursuit of excellence in athletics, particularly as an esteemed wrestling coach and a long-time athletic director. His passion for the sport was unparalleled, and his commitment to nurturing young talent was truly remarkable.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Coach Raybon was inducted into the prestigious NCHSAA Hall of Fame in 2005. This honor stands as a testament to his exceptional coaching abilities and the positive influence he had on the wrestling community at large.

At Ragsdale High School, Coach Raybon's impact was so profound that the gymnasium was named after him, forever commemorating his dedication and legacy. His leadership and guidance inspired countless athletes, instilling in them the values of discipline, perseverance, and sportsmanship.

Coach Raybon's passing leaves a void in our hearts, but his memory will forever be cherished. His unwavering commitment to his athletes and his unwavering passion for the sport of wrestling will continue to inspire generations to come.
