LEXINGTON, N.C. — The Davidson County Health Department said a rabid fox attacked three people at a school bus stop.
It happened in Lexington near the American Children's Home.
"It was very very scary and were very very lucky somebody was looking out for us that day," said Kathy Berrier, President and CEO of American Children's Home.
Berrier says the two kids that were involved were part of their program. Health officials said the fox attacked two teenagers but did not break the skin.
"Our staff witnessed the fox coming out of the woods and tried to attack some children's shoes and he was able to get them in the cottage," said Berrier, "Thankfully the quick thinking of our staff prevented any danger to our children."
It then ran off and bit someone else before being taken down.
"It appeared to be in distress. Kind of whining, crying like, and just was sickly looking," said Berrier.
This is the fifth case of rabies in Davidson County this year. Guilford County had its tenth case after a bat tested positive for rabies last week.
"We don’t train for that specifically, but our staff are constantly trained to watch for threats and be vigilant in the course of taking care of children and being safe and secure," said Berrier.
If you see a rabid animal, stay away and call animal control. If you've been bitten or scratched, go to the doctor right away.
