GREENSBORO, N.C. — A person is dead after a traffic stop turned into a fatal crash on Franklin Boulevard on Monday, Aug. 5, according to the Greensboro Police Department.

On July 26, Greensboro Police said they attempted to stop a black Dodge Charger. During the stop, a passenger fled and was apprehended with a modified handgun. The driver of the Charger escaped and was not found.

Ballistics linked the handgun to two shootings in Greensboro.

On Aug. 5, officers spotted the Charger around 2 p.m. near Holts Chapel Road and Franklin Boulevard.

Officers said they attempted to contain the vehicle, but it struck a police car and fled. After a brief pursuit, the Charger crashed into a stone retaining wall at Franklin Boulevard and Burlington Road.

The driver was extracted and given life-saving measures but was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.

The Greensboro Police Department has asked the High Point Police Department to conduct an independent crash investigation.

The crash report revealed the teen sped off at 100 miles an hour. He later hit a pair of curbs, then went into a stone wall on Burlington Road, and then later died.

An internal investigation by the Professional Standards Division will determine if policies were followed.

The officers involved are on administrative duty pending the investigation.
