CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police announced Thursday that they've filed 32 sex crime charges against a Charlotte doctor.

Dr. Fidelis Edosomwan, 53, turned himself in Thursday afternoon after sexual assault detectives filed 16 counts of sexual battery and 16 counts of sexual assault against him.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police say their investigation into sexual assault allegations against the doctor identified 31 total victims. Further, CMPD says an additional eight cases were identified, but are outside the statute of limitations.

Edosomwan was initially arrested in late-January after two victims reported inappropriate touching during routine examinations.

"Both of the victims were at the doctor's office to have routine exams done and that's another issue. You've got somebody who is entrusted with conducting these types of medical examinations who violated that trust by doing some inappropriate activity," said Capt. Cecil Brisbon of CMPD's Major Crimes Division.

Edosomwan voluntarily agreed to suspend his medical license pending an investigation into the first two women's claims.

The 32 counts filed Thursday are in addition to the initial charges filed in late-January.
