MORRISVILLE, N.C. — Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) said its main runway has reopened for flights coming and going Wednesday. The FAA put a stop on flights earlier this afternoon after officials said a small plane crashed at the airport.
The aircraft belongs to UNC Health, the hospital system confirmed with WNCN.
“The plane was carrying one physician and the pilot. Both have been taken to the hospital,” UNC Health said in a statement.
The plane could be seen in a grassy area with at least one wing detached and a UNC-Chapel Hill logo.
According to the plane's log, it took off from Wilmington at 9:33 a.m. before the crash at RDU Wednesday morning. The log also shows the plane flew to Wilmington from RDU just a couple hours earlier.
There's no word on the cause of the crash at this time.
Piedmont Triad International Airport (PTI) confirmed some RDU flights diverted at PTI and are holding there until the go ahead is given to go to RDU.
