PILOT MOUNTAIN, N.C. — Pilot Mountain State Park will close its access to the Yadkin River, beginning February 5 through the end of 2024.
North Carolina State Parks officials said the access, known as the Bean Shoals Access, will be under construction for improvements, followed by a stream restoration project. Surry County is funding the project with a $3.6 million grant from the state.
NC State Parks officials said the goal is to improve the visitor experience and protect natural resources along the Yadkin River.
NC State Parks said currently, there are safety challenges for low-clearance vehicles to get to the river access. Cars must cross Horne Creek three times. In addition, officials said it's dangerous for any car to cross the creek when heavy rain comes, due to the increased water levels.
The construction project will add three culvert bridges over the creek as well as a parking area for a scenic overlook of the river.
"This much-needed project will contribute to the conservation of the Yadkin River watershed, while still allowing visitors to access hiking and equestrian trails, fishing, the historic remnants of the Bean Shoals Canal, and beautiful views of the river and the Yadkin Islands," Pilot Mountain State Park Superintendent Jason Anthony said.
