NCDOJ investigating Pilot Mountain Police Department

The Pilot Mountain Police Department is under investigation by the North Carolina Department of Justice.

PILOT MOUNTAIN, N.C. — The North Carolina Department of Justice (DOJ) is investigating a Triad police department.

The DOJ said it is investigating the Pilot Mountain Police Department's conduct but couldn't provide details.

You might remember when the town fired three officers, and the police chief resigned in 2023 after a fraud investigation.

It accused officers of collecting checks for off-duty work but never doing any work.

Investigators also found one of the officers used their position to work around ATF regulations.

Again, it's not clear if the latest investigation from the state is tied to this all.

The Town of Pilot Mountain released the following statement:

We are aware of reports that the North Carolina Department of Justice is reviewing the criminal investigation completed by the District Attorney regarding the allegations of fraud committed by former members of the Pilot Mountain Police Department, including Mr. Robbie Jackson. At this time, we have no additional information and will update the public once we know more.

This is a separate investigation from the U.S. Department of Labor, Wage and Hour Division, but we can confirm that both investigations are related to the alleged fraud by former police officers.

We are extremely confident in our internal investigation, which was completed late last year. However, we are closely monitoring the criminal investigation and are prepared to take additional steps if new information is revealed.

“Interim Police Chief Adrian Tillotson has our full confidence, and we are grateful for his exemplary leadership during this time,” said Mayor Evan Cockerham.
