GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — A Piedmont Triad ambulance rescue truck was involved in a crash at the intersection of Eastchester Drive and North Main Street Tuesday night.

Guilford County EMS said they responded to the crash on Westchester Drive at 10:30 p.m. where they took two people to the hospital with minor injuries.

EMS said a car was going east on Westchester Drive in the far-right lane. The driver, Latia McSwain, came to a stop at the red light when she approached the intersection of Westchester Drive and North Main Street.

McSwain was stopped for approximately 15 seconds at the red light before speeding through the light and crashing into the ambulance that was going north on North Main Street.

There were minor injuries reported and all parties were taken to a nearby hospital for further evaluation.

McSwain was cited for the red light violation and was also charged with driving while impaired.

Summer O'Neal, mother of the woman who was driving the ambulance, says her daughter and her coworker "walked away from a scary situation that could've been a lot worse."

"DUI's are 100% preventable as there are other means of transportation available. Think before you sit behind [a] wheel," she said.

According to the ambulance driver, there were no patients on board at the time of the crash, and the ambulance was in non-emergency mode. The ambulance was heavily damaged as a result of the crash.
