Piedmont Natural Gas Requests 9 Percent Rate Increase; Its First Since 2013

For the first time in six years PNG wants to raise customers rates to cover cost of growth, infrastructure investments.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Customers in North Carolina who use Piedmont Natural Gas (PNG) may have to shell out a few more bucks for gas.

Monday, the company put in a request with the NC Utilities Commission (NCUC) for a 9 percent rate increase for customers in the state. In a news release, PNG says money from the rate increase will be used to cover costs related to system growth, pipeline management, infrastructure investments and more.

PNG says the company hasn't asked for a base rate increase since 2013.

The increase will affect residential, commercial and industrial customers. If approved, some customers can expect to see a $6 increase in their monthly bill. PNG also says, in their release, bills for residential customers will be less than 2008 due to continued low price of natural gas.
