BURLINGTON, N.C. — The City of Burlington is upping it's pickleball game!
Construction is underway on a brand new 17-court pickleball complex at City Park as well as 6 permanent pickleball courts at Fairchild Park.
The Burlington Pickleball Complex, near the Burlington Tennis Center at City Park, will include one shaded 'Championship Court' with bleachers for spectators. There will be additional spectator shade structures throughout the facility and a new restroom building.
One pickleball group in Burlington has over 100 members, with 40-50 people playing consistently at Fairchild Park, the city says.
What is Pickleball?
Pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in the country.
It combines elements of tennis and ping pong and is an accessible sport for people of all ages and skill levels. The smaller courts are more manageable, pickleball paddles are lighter than tennis racquets, and the ball speed is slower.
It is also a social sport, often played in a doubles format and the smaller courts allow for easier interaction with the opposing team.
Having the option to rotate in and out after each game or round can help create a sense of community.
Sports Tourism
Athletic tournaments for adults and youth can be major economic opportunities for a community.
People travel to a city to play, often staying in hotels, eating in local restaurants, and shopping at local stores.
The City Park Pickleball Complex will help make Burlington a destination for the regional athletic tournament play that can generate a lot of revenue for our local businesses.
