Former first round cornerback Caleb Farley signs with Panthers

The cornerback was selected in the first round of the 2021 draft by the Tennessee Titans.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte-area standout was signed to the Carolina Panthers practice squad.

Cornerback Caleb Farley signed with the team on Tuesday after a tryout, according to the team. The 25-year-old was released by the Tennessee Titans in August.

The Titans drafted Farley in the first round of the 2021 draft after he played at Virginia Tech. Farley has been plagued with injuries during his career. He played in only 12 games during his first two seasons and missed all of 2023 because of injuries.

Farley made the All-ACC team in his sophomore season with Virginia Tech. He opted out of his junior year because of the COVID-19 pandemic before declaring for the NFL Draft.

Before reaching Virginia Tech, Farley played quarterback for Maiden High School in Catawba County. He was a dual threat as a passer and runner and is ranked ninth in North Carolina history for most yards gained in a career.

Farley's father, Robert Farley, was killed when his home exploded in Mooresville in August 2023. Investigators determined that a natural gas leak caused the deadly explosion.

The Panthers also signed linebacker Chandler Wooten to the practice squad on Tuesday. Wooten was added to give the team depth after linebacker Shaq Thompson suffered a season-ending injury in Sunday's loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. Wooten played with the Panthers the last two seasons in mostly a backup role.

Carolina is 1-3 so far this season but the team's revamped offense should give the Panthers a decent shot at a win against the Chicago Bears in Week 5 on Sunday.
