A cemetery marker mishap has Greensboro woman calling WFMY News 2 for help

Brenda McAdoo ordered the marker, but she was shocked when she saw it. The marker wasn't what she ordered.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Tucked away on a backroad in Greensboro is a small cemetery surrounded by tall trees. The graveyard is simple yet nice, and several people from Brenda McAdoo’s family are buried there.

“I just like to come out, especially on birthdays and holidays,” McAdoo said.

One of her family members buried there is Clara Jean McAdoo Dockery. Brenda McAdoo and the family had a marker made to put down at the gravesite. The marker included McAdoo Dockery’s name, birth date, and the day she passed; it also included the words ‘In loving memory.'

“It was upsetting because it was not what I wanted,” McAdoo said.

The inscription was outside the border on the marker. McAdoo wanted all the words on the inside.

“It hurts to know that I have to look at this (the) rest of my life,” McAdoo said.

After seeing the mistake, McAdoo contacted the company that made the marker and asked them to fix it.

“He just refused to do anything,” McAdoo said.

After every visit, the frustration mounted as McAdoo had to see the marker time after time. While the marker wasn’t too expensive, it wasn’t cheap, and it wasn’t what she wanted.

After trying to get a resolution of sorts without any, McAdoo called WFMY News 2 for help. Our team immediately contacted the company that made the marker and spoke with a representative. The company agreed to investigate the matter and get back to us and McAdoo.

A couple of weeks later, McAdoo received a call from the company, and one of the supervisors agreed to refund part of the money McAdoo and the family paid. It wasn’t the perfect outcome, but it was something, and if McAdoo decides to have the marker redone eventually, it will certainly help pay for a new one.

“If not for (WFMY) News 2, that would not have happened,” McAdoo said.
