A Greensboro woman calls WFMY News 2 after dispute with HOA and plumbing bills

Debra Richert is on a fixed income. When she paid an expensive plumbing bill it was tough. She contacted the HOA about the bills but said they didn't call back.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Debra Richert wasn’t exactly sure what was going on. Almost every morning she would walk outside her townhome and notice water flowing down the street.

“My water bill was not going up but water was going onto the road,” Richert said.

The water was starting to sit in an area by her front porch before pouring onto the road. Richert would eventually call the HOA and then a plumber.

“I told (the plumber) I had a leak and they said they would come out and check it out,” Richert said.

A leak detection company was finally able to determine there was a leak in the pipe under a giant tree in the front yard.

“The tree roots were wrapped around the pipe,” Richert said.

One of those roots punctured the pipe. The hole was small but big enough to cause a muddy mess in Richert’s yard. A tree removal company had to remove the tree before the pipe could be repaired.

The bill for all this was around $3,000.

“I'm on a fixed income and I really, it was just driving me crazy,” Richert said.

The HOA was notified but did not accept responsibility or pay for the repairs. After several calls to the HOA, Richert decided to call WFMY News 2.

“They did not return my phone calls, I called five times and no return call,” Richert said.

We immediately reached out to the HOA management company to figure out what was going on. A representative talked with us and promised the company would investigate the issue. A couple of weeks later a representative called us back to let us know Richert would be reimbursed for the tree removal and the plumbing bill.

“Thank you so much for helping me, if I have a problem again you will be the first people I call,” Richert said.
