BURLINGTON, N.C. — Chester Cheek was inside watching television when he heard a bang outside. He wasn’t sure what it was at first, so he walked to the front door.
“I looked out the window and he pulled over and was standing there,” Cheek said.
A delivery driver was standing by his van at the edge of the driveway. Next to the van, was Cheek’s mailbox.
“I said, 'What’s up man? He says nothing’s up, my supervisor will take care of this,'” Cheek said.
The driver had accidentally slammed into the mailbox, knocking it over and denting it. Cheek talked with the driver but also called the police to file a report. Cheek also spoke with the delivery company supervisor who said he would reach back out soon.
“The supervisor said he was going to come out, (he) never called, (he) never came out,” Cheek said.
About a week passed when Cheek decided to try and stand the mailbox up using cinder blocks, rebar, and bungee cords. It worked, but it was not attractive. Cheek wanted a new mailbox.
Eventually, Cheek was put in contact with a contractor to come out and fix it at no cost to him.
“So, I kept calling the contractor for about three months, and he kept saying he would send somebody to fix it,” Cheek said.
After waiting three months, Cheek decided to call WFMY News 2 for help. We contacted the delivery company, and that three-month delay didn’t last much longer. The company was quick to get the issue resolved so the mailbox could be replaced.
“Within two hours (of you calling them), they called me back and said we are ready to fix it,” Cheek said.
The new mailbox was installed a few days later, at no cost to Cheek. The delivery company paid for the new mailbox, which was around $1,000.
“News 2 is amazing, if anybody needs (something) call News 2,” Cheek said.
