A Greensboro woman calls WFMY after going without hot water and heat for more than a week

Katherine Reiser had an extra blanket and a comforter to stay warm at night. She couldn't even take a hot shower to warm up.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Most of us have heard the Frank Sinatra holiday classic, Let it Snow. One of the lines in the song is, "Oh the weather outside is frightful but inside it’s so delightful." That lyric isn’t exactly true for everyone living in the Triad.

Katherine Reiser contacted WFMY News 2 when the hot water and the HVAC unit in her apartment went out at about the same time. Reiser had reached out to a manager at the complex, but he wasn’t quick to respond.

Reiser went about a week before calling us [WFMY News 2] at the station.

“My heat went out in here and it was very cold,” Reiser said. I just had an extra blanket and a comforter.”

Reiser said she called the complex to complain several times, but it didn’t make a difference.

“They did not respond; they did not return my calls,” Reiser said.

Some nights the temperature in the apartment dipped into the 40’s. Reiser said sleeping when it was that cold was not pleasant.

“I was cold, and I kept being cold,” Reiser said. “I was like I can’t deal with this.”

Once Reiser called us, things quickly got better. We contacted the apartment complex, and a maintenance team was out to her unit within 36 hours. The water heater was replaced, and the HVAC system was fixed.

“You got immediate action,” Reiser said.

When listening to holiday music, Reiser can now embrace the popular song and agree that inside it is delightful, even if it won’t be snowing in North Carolina anytime soon.
