A Jamestown man calls WFMY News 2 after a hearing aid company refuses to refund his money

Jim Graves bought the hearing aids in hopes it would help him hear better. The main sound he heard was a screeching sound when he ate.

JAMESTOWN, N.C. — Jim Graves is the kind of guy that makes friends with almost everyone he meets. He’s also the kind of guy that could strike up a conversation and have it last for hours.

Graves enjoys life and loves talking to people about almost anything. There was just one small problem that recently started to become a bigger problem.

“My family was noticing my hearing was getting worse because I was having to get them to repeat things,” Graves said.

At that point he decided it was time to go shopping for some hearing aids. Graves spent a couple of weeks looking into devices and companies. He eventually made an appointment with a doctor an ordered the hearing aids.

“Ever since the first day I bought them when I would chew, they would make a loud screeching noise,” Graves said.

The noise was apparently so loud that people in the room could hear it. Graves went to visit his doctor to see if adjustments would help.

“I went back 20 to 25 times, he would make adjustments, next day screeching was back,” Graves said.

After several months of trying to get the hearing aids to work, Graves asked them to terminate the contract and he’d return the hearing aids. The hearing aids cost around $8,000.

The company sent Graves a letter stating it would not cancel the contract and that Graves would owe the balance. At that point Graves made another decision.

“I said I’m going to call 2 Wants to Know and see if they can help me,” Graves said.

He sent us an email asking if we could assist him. We immediately contacted the company and explained the situation. Graves had documentation of his visits to the doctor to have the hearing aids adjusted.

A couple weeks later Graves was told the company would cancel the contract and Graves could return the hearing aids.

“I didn’t have any success until 2 Wants to Know helped me,” Graves said. “If it hadn’t been for News 2 I would not have gotten the contract cancelled.”
