A cemetery places the wrong marker next to her husband's grave

Peggy Cox was confused and hurt when she went to visit her husband's gravesite and saw a marker with another woman's name next to his.

ASHEBORO, N.C. — Larry and Peggy Cox met for the first time back in the 1960’s. The couple would later marry and stay together for 51 wonderful years.

“He was a great man,” Peggy Cox said.

Larry Cox served in the Army and was an avid car buff. The couple enjoyed the outdoors and spent a lot of time exploring.

“We had a great life, we really did,” Cox said.

In 2021, Larry passed away. The couple had prepared for the day and had already purchased cemetery plots and markers for each.

After Larry was buried, his marker was placed by his graveside, a short time later Peggy asked for her marker to be placed next to Larry’s. One day, Peggy visited the gravesite and noticed something wasn’t right.

“They had Peggy T Cox instead of Peggy C Cox, they had my birthday as December 15th, 1947, instead of May 1948,” Cox said.

The marker belonged to a different lady and upon further inspection Peggy found her marker not far away next to another man.

“I’ve called the corporate office numerous times, nothing,” Cox said. “They said they would research it and call me back, they never called back.”

Peggy Cox contacted an attorney and said he sent a letter to the company that owns and operates the cemetery. After more than a year, Peggy Cox was about to give up.

“I was at the end of my rope, I did all I knew to do,” Cox said.

She decided to try one last thing. A week or so later she called WFMY News 2. Our team immediately went to work to see if anything could be done. It took some time but we were able to reach someone from the corporate office who promised us they would investigate the issue.

“It’s heartbreaking when you can’t get them to do anything,” Cox said.

A short time later we received a call letting us know the markers would be moved and that Peggy’s would be placed next to her husband Larry.

“(I’m) relieved, I feel so much better now,” Cox said. “It’s in the right spot now.”

Visits to the cemetery are much better now. It wasn’t easy seeing another person’s marker next to your husband and seeing yours next to another man.

Peggy jokes it was the longest they were ever apart, the last time.
