WFMY News 2 investigation ends with car dealership replacing engine after tests show problems

Eric Cook knew something wasn't right but the place he bought the car wasn't going to cover the cost to repair it. The car needed a new engine and those aren't cheap

WALNUT COVE, N.C. — It wasn’t the worst call Eric Cook could get but it wasn’t great. His wife was on the other end of the phone, and it was about the car.

“She called me one day and said the oil light came on and I don’t know what to do,” Cook said.

They took the car to a mechanic nearby. The oil was critically low.

“He changed the oil, and he said like a little blob came out that was it,” Cook said.

The next day Cook called the car dealership he bought it at. They decided it was best to run an oil consumption test to make sure everything was performing properly.

Cook and his wife did multiple oil consumption tests and each time the oil was low.

“Then the third time we were getting ill about it, they said they’d do an engine flush and some kind of combustion clean,” Cook said.

Another oil consumption test was done and again the test showed the car was burning oil faster than it should. The car shop acknowledged the engine wasn’t performing properly but they declined to fix it.

“I was so mad one day I was sitting in there and I could almost cry because when you get to a point where you can’t do anything further – what are you going to do,” Cook said.

It seemed like they were just going to have to deal with the fact the engine was burning oil too fast. Cook contacted the Attorney General’s Office and thought about calling an attorney, instead he called WFMY News 2.

Our Call for Action team reached out to the car shop. A few days later Cook got a call from one of the managers.

“They got in touch with us and said we would like to take your car and check it out really good to see the exact problem,” Cook said.

After inspecting the car, it was determined the best course of action was to replace the engine. The shop told Cook it would replace the engine at no cost to him.

“I don’t know what to say other than thank you guys, you helped me so much,” Cook said.

The engine was put in and Cook was given a loaner while the work was done. He and his wife have the car back now and it’s doing well.
