A restoration company fails to complete job after collecting insurance money

Rosetta Foust called her insurance company to help pay for the repairs. The company sent her a check for $5,000 but the company she hired bailed.

BURLINGTON, N.C. — Rosetta Foust is one of those people who, when they find something they like, never leave. Her house is a perfect example.

“When we bought the house (it had) just four rooms, we remodeled the house and added a bathroom, a bedroom, a laundry room, and a sun porch,” Foust said.

The house is now close to perfect, which is why, 58 years later, she still lives in it.

“It’s a nice neighborhood — very quiet,” Foust said.

So quiet that Foust was able to hear a problem in the bathroom. The kind of problem most homeowners will eventually deal with.

“I was in the bedroom watching TV and I heard the commode bubbling, I said what’s going on,” Foust said.

A pipe running from the bathroom had backed up, and water was bubbling up and pouring all over the floor. Foust cleaned it up as best she could, but not before the floors and other items were damaged.

“Water was just coming up out of the floor everywhere. The whole floor was coming up,” Foust said.

A plumber was called, and eventually, a restoration company. Foust contacted her insurance company and filed a claim. The insurance company settled and sent Foust a $5,000 check to cover the cost of the repairs.

“She (restoration company) came over and picked up the check,” Foust said.

When the restoration company didn’t follow through on the agreed-upon repairs Foust called WFMY News 2. While we started to investigate, Foust contacted the insurance company and asked to have a stop payment put on the insurance check.

“You told me if I can help you, I’ll help you, so that’s how I got involved with (WFMYNews 2),” Foust said.

Once the insurance money was stopped and able to be redistributed Foust fired the initial repair company and hired another contractor to replace the floors and finish repairing the bathroom.

“I’ve seen you on TV helping others, so I called. I really appreciate what you’ve done,” Foust said.

It took a couple extra weeks, but Foust was finally able to get her bathroom repaired, and she used her insurance money to cover the cost.
