Greensboro man calls WFMY News 2 after apartment complex fails to repair pipe leak

Andre Crutchfield woke up one morning and stepped into a pool of water by the kitchen. Three weeks went by without a fix.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Andre Crutchfield has been through a lot in the last few years. A dialysis patient, Crutchfield has a serious kidney issue.

“I lost my appetite, I don’t eat a lot,” Crutchfield said.

The health problems and the expenses are in part why Crutchfield moved into a new apartment last year.

“Because I’m on dialysis I was looking for a place that had disability discount,” Crutchfield said.

The apartment was closer to his medical appointments and was less expensive than his previous unit. Everything seemed to be going well until one morning last year.

“I don’t know what happened, all I know is I came out of the bedroom (and my) kitchen floor had water (on it),” Crutchfield said.

The water was from a leaking pipe in the wall of the apartment. Crutchfield contacted the manager at the complex to repair the pipe and clean up the mess.

“I got a call saying someone will come out. Three weeks went by, and nothing,” Crutchfield said.

The water continued leaking, forcing Crutchfield to mop the floor every hour.

“I couldn’t cook, I had to order food – I could not go in the kitchen, I could not use the refrigerator, it was terrible,” Crutchfield said.

After waiting almost, a month for the issue to be resolved Crutchfield called WFMY News 2 for help.

“I didn’t know what to do,” Crutchfield said.

We immediately contacted the apartment manager and explained what was going on. We told them we were investigating the problem and wanted to know exactly what was happening and why the leak hadn’t been fixed in the past month.

The manager reached out to Crutchfield a couple of days later and offered to move him into another unit.

“They got a moving company, they got a truck, and they moved everything in one afternoon,” Crutchfield said.

The new unit is working out well and Crutchfield hasn’t had any issues since.

“Thank you so much for helping me,” Crutchfield said.
