A Greensboro woman calls WFMY News 2 after apartment complex fails to fix broken AC unit

Sheronica Thombs was suffering through temperatures inside her apartment around 90 degrees.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Sheronica Thombs is one of those people who take pride in their home. Thombs has lived in her Greensboro apartment for more than seven years. The unit is nice, and she keeps the inside clean.

“It was going well at first, very good, no problems, no issues, nothing,” Thombs said.

The complex recently changed as a new management company was brought in. Thombs said things went downhill after that. The biggest problem is getting something fixed when it breaks.

“They don’t want to fix something, they come when they want to,” Thombs said. “When you go to the office to complain about what is going on they (blow you off) and get you out.”

Earlier this summer the AC unit in Thombs apartment went out. Thombs told WFMY News 2 that she tried to get management to fix the unit for weeks with no luck. At times the unit would creep up into the 90’s.

“It was hot and miserable, 90 degrees up here, 90 degrees, 90 degrees, (it was) hot,” Thombs said.

The nights were the worst according to Thombs, while it was a bit cooler it is incredibly uncomfortable to try and sleep when the temperature in the apartment is in the mid to high 80s.

“(I was) tossing and turning, going back and forth to the bathroom, my shirt was drenched, just soaked,” Thombs said.

At that point, Thombs had enough but wasn’t exactly sure what else she could do.

“I asked one of the (other) residents what can I do, who can I reach out to, to get through to them, they told me to call News 2,” Thombs said.

A day later Thombs reached out to WFMY News 2 and we contacted the management company. A representative told us they would investigate the issue and call us back with an update.

Later that week Thombs received a phone call from one of the managers.

“After I called you it was like 4 days after to be exact, it was on a Friday. I’ll never forget,” Thombs said.

A technician was out later that day, and the unit was up and running a short time later.

“I really do appreciate it, big thanks,” Thombs said.

The unit has been working great ever since, Thombs just hopes the next time something breaks she doesn't have to call us again for help.
