CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — A man died in a crash on Highland Avenue NE at Fairgrove Church Road in Catawba County late Friday night.
The NC State Highway Patrol responded to the crash at around 11:25 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27. A 2013 Hyundai Sonata traveling south on Fairgrove Church Road entered the intersection at a red light and collided with a 2015 Dodge Ram traveling east on Highland Avenue NE.
Mauricio Diaz Gomez, 24, of Hickory, was the driver of the Hyundai and died at the scene. A female passenger and a child were transported to a nearby hospital and had non-life-threatening injuries.
James Nicholas Walker, 44, of Lenior, was the driver of the Dodge and was transported by EMS to a hospital and had non-life-threatening injuries. A juvenile passenger was also transported to a nearby hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The NC State Highway Patrol said the initial investigation does not indicate impairment as a contributing factor in the crash and no charges will be filed. The road was closed for about two hours during the on-scene investigation.
