WILSON COUNTY, N.C. — A woman's kindness was vital in the immediate aftermath of North Carolina State Highway Patrol Trooper Daniel Harrell's shooting.
Sherice Richardson stayed with Harrell moments after he was shot in the face and neck during a traffic stop in Wilson County Monday.
"He kept saying 'I'm hit, I'm hit,'" Richardson told WFMY News 2. "I assured him help was on the way."
In a Facebook post, Richardson says she was on her way to pick up her baby from daycare when she saw Harrell's car smoking with bullet holes in the windshield.
Richardson, a dialysis nurse, said she and another person helped wrap Harrell's face to control the bleeding while they waited for EMS to arrive.
Richardson said the experience changed her feelings about law enforcement, giving her a new perspective.
"There have been so many wonderful officers, current and retired, reaching out to me explaining their daily fears," she said. "Being human, I previously only saw that negative side of law enforcement. But I definitely support the “blue” now and pray nothing but the best for them!"
