GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Northern Guilford High School in Greensboro is forfeiting another game due to a North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) violation.
In a statement, Guilford County Schools (GCS) said the violation happened during the Sept. 6 game against Northwest Guilford High School. NCHSAA rules say juniors can't play in both junior varsity and varsity games in the same week; GCS said juniors played in both games.
The school noticed the mistake while reviewing another violation from a game on Sept. 13 against Williams High School. In that game, Northern Guilford High School played 13 junior varsity players. However, N.C. high school football teams are only allowed to play 12 in a varsity game.
Principal Will Laine said don't compare the recent violations to the way things used to be. "That was a case of using players that were out of district. Some folks knew about that and didn't respond accordingly. As we walk down this path, it was just an oversight, wasn't for competitive advantage, we weren't pulling athletes in from out of district, they weren't academically ineligible to play, really it was just a misunderstanding of the rule."
Fines for these violations can be as much as $500. GCS says since they self-reported both of these violations they will only be charged $250 for each.
