NORTH WILKESBORO, N.C. — The historic North Wilkesboro Speedway is getting another makeover - this time it's repaving the track.
It hasn't happened since 1981.
The fresh pavement will give drivers more grip and a different style of racing.
"We wanted to try and knock it out this year before we get into the spring. Naturally, the longer a track has to sit and age the better the racing becomes as we get to May, " said Steve Swift the Speedway Motorsports Senior Vice President of Operations and Development.
They're getting ready for next year's NASCAR all-star race in May.
"You know a track, I don’t believe, has been ran on forty-year-old surface other than North Wilkesboro. So, to go from that and in then next year we going to give them same guys to do it on fresh asphalt, better grip and a little different style racing is pretty exciting," said Swift.
