MT. AIRY, NC (WFMY)-- Surry County is mourning the death of a North Surry High School student who died this weekend.
According to the Surry County Sheriff's Office, Ernesto Garcia was walking in the road on Highway 52 when he was struck by a minivan just North of Old Buck Shoals Rd. Garcia died Saturday night.
Surry County Schools said he was a rising senior at North Surry High.
The school system released a statement Sunday night about Garcia's death:
"We extend our deepest sympathies to Ernesto's family and many friends," said a release. "Please join us in surrounding them with prayers, love, and support in the days to come."
